Subdomain or Subdirectory

I am wondering what will be the best structure for my sites. I would like to keep this “showroom” as clean as possible, updating every once in a while, whereas I have another blog that will be much more active, connected to my brand “vanweerd.com” but with a different layout and a completely different style. It currently resides on the same WordPress install, yet based on another heavily modded theme. Where looks are less important than content and accessibility.

Using a subdirectory will very likely cause issues with the WordPress permalink structure, yet I don’t want to break the connection between the showroom and the workshop.

Any ideas?
